What you do with these ventures is list a product you have that you are prepared to giveaway, on the sales page for that product you have a email list sign up form from your autoresponder, the person then has to fill in your form to get the link to download your product emailed to them. Hey presto you get a subscriber and the person gets a free product.

Remember to offer a good quality product as there are LOTS of downloads available and if you are giving away something crap then nobody will want it hence no email list for you.
